Zero Liquid Discharge System (MEE)

About Company

A Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) System is an advanced water treatment process that ensures no liquid waste leaves the facility, enabling complete wastewater recycling. It is designed to recover water for reuse while converting residual contaminants into solid waste for safe disposal. The core of a ZLD system is the Multiple Effect Evaporator (MEE), which plays a critical role in achieving near-total water recovery.

Key Components of a ZLD System
  1. Pre-Treatment:

    • Removes suspended solids, oils, and greases from wastewater.
    • Prepares the feed water for downstream treatment.
  2. Advanced Filtration:

    • Technologies like Ultrafiltration (UF), Reverse Osmosis (RO), and Nanofiltration (NF) are used to remove dissolved salts and reduce water volume before evaporation.
  3. Multiple Effect Evaporator (MEE):

    • Concentrates the wastewater by boiling and evaporating water in multiple stages.
    • Uses a cascading system to reduce energy consumption by reusing heat from one stage to the next.
    • Converts water into vapor and separates salts or other dissolved solids as a slurry.
  4. Crystallizer:

    • Further concentrates the brine from the MEE to produce solid waste.
    • Ensures complete removal of liquid from the wastewater stream.
  5. Condensation and Water Recovery:

    • The vapor from the MEE is condensed and treated to produce high-quality water for reuse in industrial processes.
Working of the ZLD Process with MEE
  1. Feedwater Treatment:

    • Wastewater is pre-treated to remove large solids and organic matter.
  2. Filtration and Concentration:

    • Advanced filtration reduces the volume of wastewater and prepares it for evaporation.
  3. Evaporation in MEE:

    • Water is evaporated in multiple stages using reused heat, resulting in concentrated brine and water vapor.
  4. Solid Waste Separation:

    • The crystallizer converts the concentrated brine into solid waste for disposal.
  5. Water Recovery:

    • Condensed vapor is treated and reused for industrial or non-potable applications.
Benefits of a ZLD System with MEE
  • Environmental Protection: Prevents liquid discharge into water bodies, eliminating pollution.
  • Water Conservation: Recovers up to 95–99% of water for reuse.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Meets stringent environmental regulations for wastewater disposal.
  • Cost Efficiency: Reduces dependency on freshwater sources, saving operational costs.
  • Sustainability: Minimizes environmental footprint and supports circular water economy.
Applications of ZLD Systems
  1. Industrial Sectors:

    • Textiles and Dyeing
    • Power Plants
    • Pharmaceuticals
    • Chemicals and Petrochemicals
  2. Heavy Metal Removal:

    • Suitable for industries with high levels of toxic or heavy metals in wastewater.
  3. Effluent Treatment:

    • Effectively handles wastewater with high salinity or Total Dissolved Solids (TDS).
